Tips To Improve Shooting in Basketball

If you love playing basketball but feel that your shooting ability is not up to par, there are some basketball training tips that may help you. It's true that shooting a basketball is only one aspect of this fast-paced game, but it is a very important aspect and one that is necessary to be successful in this sport. Not only is shooting the ball the method that gets points on the scoreboard for your team but it is important in other ways as well. When your opponents have to use extra players to defend a good shooter, it leaves your teammates open to make plays and score points.
Basketball shooting tips is a good way of improving your game. Check out these three great tips in this article if you want to become a better shooter.

Basketball Shooting Drills

Basketball drills are a productive way to improve your game. They improve your consistency and better your abilities in a wide range of situations. Sure, you could just keep throwing free throws and do nothing else but that is barely going to raise your game. Instead, do a variety of individual and team drills, and they will improve not only your shooting but also your versatility and overall fitness.

Do not ignore the Basic Layup

Practice doing layups using either your hands. Actually, you want to incorporate these because one of the keys to becoming a better shooter is to become more natural and "And One" scorers with the ball. By doing a whole variety of training including layups, you can better hone this ability. Nevertheless, the better you get at layups then, the better you also get at free throws and 3-pointers, precisely because you know that ball inside out as if it were almost attached to you.

Follow Through

Make sure to do adequate follow through on every single shot that you make. You may have a strange follow through the technique that your buddies laugh at but if it works for you (and is not incorrect form) then ignore this and keep going. In all ball sports, follow through is essential. If your follow through is not good then it means that your overall technique was not either.

Video

The basic shot involves several techniques all rolled into one. You know the technique because you see NBA stars show it off all the time. But how do you know if you are doing things right? Instead, grab yourself a video camera (even the video mode on a regular digital camera will do) and get him to record a video of you taking several shots from several angles (profile, in front, behind). Then, just like a golfer studying his all-important swing, you can analyze your form to see where you can improve it.

Practicing free throws to improve accuracy is crucial if one wants to be a real asset to their team. Many times great teams (even those in the NBA) lose games because of their inefficiency at the foul line. Having the best percentage possible at shooting your free throws is what you want. Ensure you have the proper form by getting in the correct stance by lining your feet up about shoulder distance apart with feet pointed forward toward the basket in a position that feels comfortable to you. Your knees should be slightly bent. You will want to get to the point that this position feels like second nature because it is the way you should stand each time you are preparing to shoot foul shots. Always keep your eyes on the basket and not on the path of the ball as you lift the ball a few inches above waist level and direct it toward the basket with complete follow through of your arm.
