How to Get Recruited for College Basketball

So you want to play college basketball. Well I don't know what your skill set is, which is one factor in determining if you can play. The other factor obviously is your grades. Nevertheless there are hundreds of potential Division 1, 2, 3, junior college (juco), and NAIA colleges and university that have basketball programs.

With that in mind all players are not Division 1 ready. However, this does not mean you can not play college basketball. But you must be realistic concerning your basketball circumstances grades and ability.

Don't let your ego keep you from playing the game you love. Listen, if you are offered to play basketball at Larry's Big O Tires University and you don't have any other offers, go check it out. I always say if you can get an education out of the deal and play the game you love, hey. But you know that not every college or university gives out scholarship. You might be able to walk on or get a partial scholarship. My point is don't give up on your dream to play at the next level.

Now here's the problem. How does the connection between you and a college coach come about?

A Complete College Athletic Scholarship Roadmap for High School Athletes

A Complete College Athletic Scholarship Roadmap for High School Athletes

What a whirlwind of activity surrounds signing day for college athletic scholarships all across the country! If it is a big NCAA program, there is a lot of publicity on signing day. Pictures are snapped as athletes are seen picking up their pens and signing their letters of intent.

It is an exciting and fun filled time for the athletes, their parents and friends, their high school coaches, and the entire local community. The local sports hero has signed with a big time university. The big fish in the little pond has made it to the big leagues.

On the plus side, the athlete, if he has received a full ride scholarship will have all his college expenses paid for if he agrees to play his sport for the college athletic program he has just signed with.

This is a definite boon to the high school athlete and his family.

They are all thrilled out of their minds. The local media hypes the situation to the max. Friends and distant family all get the news via email or Facebook. Everyone expects the local elite student athlete to be the star athlete for the big university sports program he or she has just signed with.

And, in truth, if everything works out like everyone hopes it will, the athlete will get to play his sport in college and he will also get a college education. With the economy being what it is today, a full ride athletic scholarship may be the only way some families could afford to send their kid to college.

But, and this is the ugly side of college athletic scholarships, what if the athlete fails to maintain his grades in college? Or, what if he or she gets hurt? Or, what if a female athlete gets pregnant? Or, what if the athlete doesn't live up to athletic expectations?

According to the NCAA, many high school student athletes and their parents are not aware that their full ride athletic scholarship is awarded on a year-to-year basis. Yes, if everything goes right, the athlete will get to play four full years, and he or she will get a higher education.

But, what happens to all these wonderful plans if any number of things, some of which we've just mentioned, should happen? In many cases the scholarship will not be awarded for the next year.

In some cases, parents will be able to pay for the rest of the athletes education, but in far too many cases there is just no money, and because the athlete has depended on the full ride athletic scholarship so heavily, no other financial aid, like academic scholarships have been applied for. This could prove devastating to both athletes and their families.

Unfortunately, this scenario is very common for football scholarships, and for other NCAA sanctioned sports as well. It happens all the time, and it is an important consideration that should be put on the table before any sports scholarships is accepted.

Parents and high school student athletes should consider all options before signing on the dotted line for a college sports scholarship. Read every line of the contract carefully, if you don't understand something, seek legal help.

If, after considering all options, they decide to go the way of full ride athletic scholarship, they should, at the very least, have some sort of back up plan in place.

Watching someone dunk a basketball has always been the highlight of a basketball game. A killer vertical jump is not only impressive on the basketball court, it's vital for becoming a solid athlete. I personally have been playing and coaching basketball for 25 years now and have fairly good knowledge on what it takes to jump higher.

I've trained athletes from barely touching the mesh to doing various kinds of dunks through out my career. There are various kinds of exercises for learning how to dunk a basketball and jumping higher. There are also various kinds of equipment you can use in order to train your muscles. However, I have found that what works best is sticking to the basics. When I say basics I mean sticking to your workout and exercise schedule and doing the right kind of exercises when required. Tips To Improve Shooting in Basketball

Tips To Improve Shooting in Basketball

If you love playing basketball but feel that your shooting ability is not up to par, there are some basketball training tips that may help you. It's true that shooting a basketball is only one aspect of this fast-paced game, but it is a very important aspect and one that is necessary to be successful in this sport. Not only is shooting the ball the method that gets points on the scoreboard for your team but it is important in other ways as well. When your opponents have to use extra players to defend a good shooter, it leaves your teammates open to make plays and score points.
Basketball shooting tips is a good way of improving your game. Check out these three great tips in this article if you want to become a better shooter.

Basketball Shooting Drills

Basketball drills are a productive way to improve your game. They improve your consistency and better your abilities in a wide range of situations. Sure, you could just keep throwing free throws and do nothing else but that is barely going to raise your game. Instead, do a variety of individual and team drills, and they will improve not only your shooting but also your versatility and overall fitness.

Do not ignore the Basic Layup

Practice doing layups using either your hands. Actually, you want to incorporate these because one of the keys to becoming a better shooter is to become more natural and "And One" scorers with the ball. By doing a whole variety of training including layups, you can better hone this ability. Nevertheless, the better you get at layups then, the better you also get at free throws and 3-pointers, precisely because you know that ball inside out as if it were almost attached to you.

Follow Through

Make sure to do adequate follow through on every single shot that you make. You may have a strange follow through the technique that your buddies laugh at but if it works for you (and is not incorrect form) then ignore this and keep going. In all ball sports, follow through is essential. If your follow through is not good then it means that your overall technique was not either.

The basic shot involves several techniques all rolled into one. You know the technique because you see NBA stars show it off all the time. But how do you know if you are doing things right? Instead, grab yourself a video camera (even the video mode on a regular digital camera will do) and get him to record a video of you taking several shots from several angles (profile, in front, behind). Then, just like a golfer studying his all-important swing, you can analyze your form to see where you can improve it.

Practicing free throws to improve accuracy is crucial if one wants to be a real asset to their team. Many times great teams (even those in the NBA) lose games because of their inefficiency at the foul line. Having the best percentage possible at shooting your free throws is what you want. Ensure you have the proper form by getting in the correct stance by lining your feet up about shoulder distance apart with feet pointed forward toward the basket in a position that feels comfortable to you. Your knees should be slightly bent. You will want to get to the point that this position feels like second nature because it is the way you should stand each time you are preparing to shoot foul shots. Always keep your eyes on the basket and not on the path of the ball as you lift the ball a few inches above waist level and direct it toward the basket with complete follow through of your arm.
